R.E. is taught to all pupils at Isca Academy and nearly all students are entered for GCSE Full course exams. At GCSE level pupils work towards two 1 hour 45 minute exams which take place in the May of Year 11. (R.E. AQA Specification A 8062). There is no course work.

The first exam is directly linked to the religions of Christianity and Buddhism. Pupils will need to know key beliefs for both religions, and they will also need to know about worship practices. The second exam is theme based and includes their own views, and religious opinions on issues like animal rights, the environment, euthanasia, abortion, war, nuclear weapons, terrorism, crime and punishment, prejudice, wealth and poverty  and  human rights. Both exams contain questions for 1 mark, 2 marks, 4 marks, 5 marks and 12 marks.

Lower down in the school pupils learn the skills they will need for GCSE, but cover a number of other topics including Islam, Sikhism, drug abuse, genetic engineering and cloning, IVF, gambling and so on.

There are a variety of ways in which pupils engage with the subject matter including quizzes, discussions, You tube clips, visiting speakers, writing tasks, peer and self- assessment and key spelling and terminology tests. Year 10 and 11 students will have mock exams.

R.E is a popular subject at Isca and over the years the GCSE results have been not only amongst the best in the school, but also amongst the best in the Devon area.
