Mathematics at Isca
The department aim to teach Mathematics in an engaging and relevant manner. We fully appreciate that all of our students have had different experiences of maths at primary school and arrive to us with varying degrees of ability and enthusiasm. Our more talented mathematicians will be challenged and excited by what we offer them. For those students who have struggled at primary school we strive to build confidence and remove the ‘fear factor’ which is often linked to underachievement.
The maths staff are all skilled specialists who create the right environment for students to grow and develop their understanding of mathematics. We encourage a deeper knowledge to ensure success rather than just teaching skills which students see as independent and cannot link.  Many of our students will cite maths as one of their favourite subjects. We now have a steady stream  of Isca students continuing their maths education at ‘A’ level with great success. The feedback  from Exeter College tells us that maths students from Isca are much more independent in their thinking and have a much deeper knowledge than students coming  from other schools.
Indeed, we have two students who were accepted at the new Exeter Mathematics School which is jointly run by Exeter University and Exeter College.
Homework is administered  online using the My Maths website.
The students are regularly assessed. Every month there is an end of module assessment in which students are challenged to revise and apply their learning. There is an opportunity for students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses to further their understanding.
Our students currently follow the Edexcel Maths GCSE course.
Exam Details
