Skills Developed
The subject specific skills that the students will develop include interpreting maps, spatial awareness, decision making, problem solving, and knowledge of places and environments at a variety of scales.

The transferable skills that students will develop include independence, interpretation skills, creativity, self-awareness and the ability to work with others. 

Assessment, Home Learning, and Fieldwork
Students are assessed termly by staff and they will be assessed in terms of progress towards their target grade. Home learning will be set regularly to support work completed in class.

Fieldwork studies take place at Exeter Central Business District in the spring, with a focus on the theme of settlement and map skills.

A fieldwork study takes place at Paignton Zoo in the spring, with a focus on the theme of endangered species and sustainability.

Year 9 10 and 11


All students study GCSE Geography and follow the B specification set out by the EDUQAS exam board.

Topic Overview
Theme 1 – Changing Places- Changing Economies. This includes; Urban and rural change, Leisure, Global cities and Development issues.
Theme 2 – Changing Environments. This includes; Rivers and coasts, Extreme weather and Climate Change.
Theme 3 – Environmental Challenges. This includes; Ecosystems, Water management and desertification.

The subject specific skills that the students will develop include interpreting maps, spatial awareness, decision making, problem solving, and knowledge of places and environments at a variety of scales.

Assessment, Home Study and Fieldwork

Students are assessed using practice controlled assessments and past exam questions. Home study tasks are set fortnightly, but revision is the priority as the final exams approach.
Fieldwork studies take place annually with locations changed to reflect the exam priorities.  Most recently they have included a trip to Bristol to compare spheres of influence, Slapton Sands to measure changes to the beach along a transect and Dartmoor to measure infiltration rates. In 2018 we ran our first joint Geography and Science residential to the island of Mallorca where we investigating various environments. This is something that we hope to continue regularly. 

Assessment

There are 3 exams at the end of year 11:
1. Component 1: Investigating Geographical Issues (1hr 45mins- 40%)
2. Component 2: Problem Solving Geography (1hr 30mins- 30%)
3. Component 3: Applied Fieldwork Enquiry (1hr 30mins- 30%)
